Directions
James White’s Fort is located at 205 East Hill Avenue in downtown Knoxville, directly across the street from the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame and within walking distance of other attractions such as Blount Mansion, Market Square, Krutch Park, Volunteer Landing, Alex Haley Park, and the Old City. Free trolley rides are available to James White’s Fort and other downtown sites from World’s Fair Park and the UT Campus. Signs are available throughout the downtown area pointing to the Fort.
Parking
Visitors to the James White’s Fort enjoy free parking in the lot directly in front of the Fort during the time they are touring the facility. For information about monthly parking and parking for special events, please call 865-525-6514. For UT home game parking details, please see calendar.
Entrance
Visitors enter the Fort at the main entrance directly off the parking lot. The front door leads into the reception area where visitors may purchase admission as well as receive an 8-page printed guide to the Fort. The tour is self-guided and the printed guide is to be returned at exit.
Special Needs
At the main entrance, there are three steps leading to the main door. A gate can be opened to allow a level access. Handicapped parking spaces are provided near the entrance. In order to maintain the authenticity of the period, certain areas might not be handicapped accessible. Please see the staff in charge for assistance for special needs.

James White’s Fort is closed during UT home football games due to parking and traffic congestion.
Some unforeseen circumstances (weather, private events, etc.) may cause us to close the Fort for a day. Please contact us before your visit to confirm hours.
Smoking is prohibited on James White’s Fort property.
